E-mail messages do not forward to Outlook.com (Hotmail) accounts

Outlook.com (also known as Hotmail) may block messages from e-mail forwarders or mark them as spam. This article describes an alternative way you can use Outlook.com to access messages from another account.

Problem

You set up an e-mail forwarder in cPanel that forwards messages from an e-mail account to Outlook.com. However, Outlook.com blocks the message or puts it in the spam folder.

Here is another scenario where e-mail forwarders appear to fail:

  • The email account user@example.com is configured to forward messages to the Outlook.com account user@hotmail.com.
  • A user logs in to the Outlook.com account user@hotmail.com and sends a message to user@example.com.
  • The message never arrives back at the Outlook.com account user@hotmail.com.

However, this behavior is by design to prevent possible email loops.

Resolution

If you experience problems with forwarded messages not reaching Outlook.com, you can configure an Outlook.com account to access another e-mail account directly. In this configuration, you do not set up an e-mail forwarder; instead, you access messages in the other account by using your Outlook.com inbox.

To set up this configuration, follow these steps:

  1. Disable any e-mail forwarders you have set up that forward messages from the UltaHost account to the Outlook.com account.
  2. Log in to the Outlook.com account.
  3. Click the settings icon (), and then click View all Outlook settings.
  4. In the left sidebar, click Sync email.
  5. Under Connected accounts, click Other email accounts.
  6. In the Connect your account dialog box, under Advanced settings, select the Manually configure account settings check box, and then click OK.
  7. In the Advanced settings dialog box, in the Email address text box, type the e-mail address that you want to access from Outlook.
  8. In the User name text box, type the full e-mail address of the UltaHost account (for example, user@example.com).
  9. In the Password text box, type the password for the UltaHost account.
  10. Select where the imported e-mail messages will be stored. You can either create a new folder in Outlook, or import e-mail into existing Outlook folders.
  11. Select the connection type, IMAP or POP.

12.In the Incoming (IMAP) server text box or Incoming (POP) server text box, type your UltaHost server name.

13.The Incoming server port text box should change to the correct value automatically:

  • For IMAP, the port is 993.
  • For POP, the port is 995.

14.For POP, if you want to keep copies of messages on the UltaHost server, select the Leave a copy of messages on the server check box.

If you do not select this option, Outlook will download messages and automatically remove them from the UltaHost account.

15.Confirm the Authentication list box is set to Basic.

16.Confirm the Encryption list box is set to SSL.

17.You can also send e-mail for the account from Outlook:

  • To send e-mail using the UltaHost server, select Send email using your provider's server, and then in the Outgoing (SMTP) server text box, type the same server name you used in step 12 above.
  • Alternatively, to send e-mail using Outlook, select Send email using the Outlook.com server.

18.Click OK. After Outlook connects to the account successfully, it appears under Manage your connected accounts. If Outlook is unable to connect to the account, verify the information you provided in steps 7 to 17, and then try again.

19.To access the messages in the account, locate the account name in the left sidebar, and then click Inbox.
