What is an SSL certificate?

A lot of people don’t know that there is a big difference between Free and Paid SSL #Certificates, In this video, we are going to break it down for you and tell you what you need to consider before making an #SSL purchase. Tune in!

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is a cryptographic protocol that provides an added layer of security for online transactions. It works by encrypting data that is sent between two computers, such as the web browser and the web server, thus preventing third parties from intercepting or tampering with the data. SSL helps ensure that private information entered into websites, such as credit card numbers and passwords, remain confidential when transmitted over public networks. SSL also provides authentication of servers, which helps prevent man-in-the-middle attacks, where a malicious actor attempts to alter the data being sent between two computers.

The difference between Free and Paid SSL Certificates

The primary difference between free and paid SSL Certificates is the level of security they can provide. Free SSL Certificates are good enough for basic website security, such as encrypting data transmitted between a web server and the user. They use an encryption algorithm of up to 256-bit strength, which is sufficient for most websites that don’t require extra protection. However, paid SSL Certificates are often considered more secure because they offer stronger encryption algorithms (up to 2048-bit strength) plus additional features such as extended validation (EV) and multiple domain names on one certificate.

Paid SSL Certificates also offer more support from the Certificate Authority (CA). Since the CA stands behind its product, it will provide a dedicated help desk with technical advisors available to answer questions about installation or any other issues you may have with your certificate. Additionally, many CAs now offer warranties that guarantee up to $1 million of damages in case something happens to the site due to a failure of the SSL Certificate. Finally, depending on your provider, some Paid SSL Certificates come with easy-to-use management tools that allow you to quickly set up and manage multiple domains on one certificate.

While both Free and Paid SSL Certificates have merits, ultimately it comes down to what your website needs in terms of security and compatibility requirements. If you need greater protection or just prefer more control over your website’s security measures then investing in a paid certificate might be worth it. Ultimately though it’s always best practice to conduct thorough research before making any decisions related to your website’s security so you can be sure you’re choosing the right option for your site’s specific needs.
